News should be accessible to everyone

The Irish Bugle is committed to ensuring our journalism is accessible to all readers, including those with disabilities. We believe everyone deserves access to independent news and information, regardless of ability or the technology they use.

Current Status

We're working to improve

The Irish Bugle is a new platform, and we're actively working to meet accessibility standards. While we've implemented many accessibility features from the start, we recognize there's always room for improvement. We're committed to ongoing enhancement of our accessibility.

Goal: We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards across our site. We're currently evaluating our compliance and addressing any gaps.

Accessibility Features

What we've built in

Visual Design

  • • Clean, readable typography with sufficient size and spacing
  • • High contrast text (dark/light modes available)
  • • Consistent, logical page structure and navigation
  • • Clear visual hierarchy using headings and sections
  • • Responsive design that works across device sizes

Keyboard Navigation

  • • All interactive elements accessible via keyboard
  • • Visible focus indicators on interactive elements
  • • Logical tab order throughout the site
  • • Keyboard shortcuts (e.g., Cmd+K for search)

Screen Reader Support

  • • Semantic HTML structure for proper screen reader interpretation
  • • Alternative text for images and graphics
  • • ARIA labels where appropriate
  • • Clear link text that makes sense out of context

Content & Media

  • • Articles formatted with clear headings and structure
  • • Videos include captions when available
  • • No auto-playing audio or video
  • • Readable font sizes (minimum 16px body text)

Known Limitations

Areas we're working to improve

We're aware of some accessibility limitations and are actively working to address them:

  • • Some third-party embedded content may not meet our accessibility standards
  • • Historical articles may have inconsistent alt text on images
  • • Complex interactive features (polls, quizzes) may need enhancement
  • • Some color contrast ratios may not meet WCAG AAA standards

We're conducting a comprehensive accessibility audit and will address issues as we identify them.

We encourage users to test our site's accessibility. Here are some tools you can use:

Keyboard Testing:

Try navigating our site using only your keyboard (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, Arrow keys). You should be able to access all functionality without a mouse.

  • High Contrast: Enable high contrast mode in your operating system
  • Text Size: Adjust default text size in your browser settings

Third-Party Content

Embedded content from other sources

Some articles include embedded content from third-party platforms (YouTube, Twitter, etc.). We have limited control over the accessibility of this content, but we:

  • • Use privacy-enhanced embedding when available (e.g., youtube-nocookie.com)
  • • Provide context and descriptions for embedded content
  • • Link to original sources so you can view them directly
  • • Avoid auto-playing embedded media

Report Accessibility Issues

Help us improve

If you encounter accessibility barriers on our site, please let us know. We take these reports seriously and will work to address them.

When reporting, please include:

  • • The page URL where you encountered the issue
  • • Description of the problem
  • • Your browser and assistive technology (if applicable)

We aim to respond to accessibility reports within 5 business days and resolve issues within 30 days when possible.

Standards & Compliance

What we're working toward

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards. These internationally recognized standards provide a framework for accessible web content.

WCAG 2.1 Principles:

  • Perceivable: Information must be presentable in ways users can perceive
  • Operable: Interface components must be operable by all users
  • Understandable: Information and operation must be understandable
  • Robust: Content must work with current and future technologies
